Since 2010 one of our ongoing Outreach Projects is the Cold Weather Care Packages.
This project was inspired by a Houseless Veteran. I was on way home from a Drs. app.
and I was getting off the exit there was a houseless guy sitting at the end of the ramp.
When I saw him I felt like crap because I did not have anything to give him.
The only thing I could do at the time was get him a nice warm lunch.
Just so happens the Sanctuary was gifted with a donation of $200.00 that very day,
which enabled us to make up 20 Care Packages that consisted of 1pr of wool gloves,
1pr of wool socks, a toboggan, 1 can of pork & beans, 1 can of Vienna sausages,
1 pk of fig newtons, 1 pk of cheddar cheese crackers, and 2 candy canes.
We thought it would be great in conjunction with the blanket drive we were organizing.
Well over 40 blankets were given out, as well as over a dozen coats & Jackets.
Each year that has followed, the out pouring of donated blankets, coats & jackets
has continued to grow. Which is a very good thing, as sadly our houseless population
has continued grow as well. In response to the swelling numbers, this past winter (2013-2014),
the Sanctuary kicked our efforts up a notch and gathered well over 50 Blankets,
65 coats & jackets, scarves & such….. as well as giving out 47 Cold Weather Care Packages.
Upon talking with several of the grateful recipients, we learned that totes & backpacks
are very helpful & useful….. so we have began collecting those this year.
If your so lead, you can donate funds for the packages as well.
It takes $10.00 to make up each package. The gloves and socks are Army issue.
We felt these items was the most important and they needed to be warm and strong.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
